I made this cowl to add to my Kaitlyn's Kaps & Kowls for Kids package I'm sending. If you'd like to contribute, details are here in my previous blog post.
Here's how I made the cowl:
I used 1 skein (170 yds) Lion Brand Vanna's Choice in Color 134 Terracotta
Size K 7.00 mm hook
Finished size: 21" x 9.5"
How to short single crochet (ssc): It's worked in the horizontal bar below the top two loops normally worked into. With the wrong side of the previous row facing you, insert hook from bottom to top under horizontal bar below front loop of next sc yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over and draw through two loops.
How to - Row 4: The faux cables are worked with the right side facing and into the top 2 loops of the row 4 rows below (ssc make the top 2 loops both visible on the right side of the fabric). To create the faux cable work with yarn in front, dc in next sc 4 rows below, sk sc behind dc just worked.
Row 1: Short single crochet (ssc) across, turn. (I posted a video here showing the ssc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc back loop only across, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, ssc across, turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc back loop only in first 2 sc, *with yarn in front, dc in next sc 4 rows below, sk sc behind dc just worked, with yarn in back, sc back loop only in next 4 sc; rep from * to end, turn.
(I posted a video here showing how to do this row)
Row 5: Ch 1, ssc across, turn.
Row 6: Ch 1, ssc across, turn.
Rep rows 1-6 until you have 5 rows of the pattern stitch.
Fasten off and weave in ends. Use mattress stitch to close the cowl at the ends.
